The Ghana National Fire Service has expressed its preparedness to offer any support to the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) to protect lives during the rainy season.
The service said it was ready to rescue victims of potential flooding as the rains set in.
Deputy Fire Officer One (DO1) Alex King Nartey said his outfit had embarked on education and sensitization programmes with stakeholders and communities prone to flooding to save lives and property.
He was, however, quick to add that they were logistically constrained.
He has therefore appealed to the government, individuals, organisations, and corporate Ghana to extend a helping hand to the service by donating logistics that can help enhance and make them effective.
“We are prepared to provide our services this season. But we are also appealing to the government, corporate Ghana, organisations, and individuals to extend support to the GNFS. We need more logistics to make us more effective and efficient,” he added.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, he stated that the GNFS will continue to train its workers and collaborate with stakeholders on flood mitigation and prevention as part of its long-term objective to reduce the impact of floods and build disaster resilience in Ghana.
Meanwhile, he has also cautioned people not to stand under trees, billboards, or electric poles because heavy rains can cause them to fall and cause damage.
He underscored the need for awareness creation on changing weather patterns and urged the public to keep track of weather forecasts and warnings by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.
He advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas, relocate to safer areas, and have an evacuation plan in place.
He further cautioned drivers to drive slowly and cautiously during heavy rains, avoid driving on flooded roads, and turn on headlights to maintain safe distances from other vehicles.
