The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended the ongoing limited registration exercise by two days.
The Electoral Commission on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the limited voter registration exercise for first-time voters and persons who wish to own a voter card.
The exercise was scheduled to last for 21 days and end on May 27, 2024.
For the first two days after the exercise started, the process encountered network challenges in some districts across the country.
Some CSOs and political parties appealed to the EC to extend the deadline for the exercise.
The EC, in response, said it would not be feasible to extend it.
However, the EC has announced an extension of the exercise by two days.
The electoral body, in a brief statement issued on its Facebook page, explained that the extension of the exercise was to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two days of the exercise.
“The Electoral Commission is pleased to inform the public that the ongoing VotersThe registration exercise has been extended for two (2) additional days.
The exercise will now end on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. This arrangementhas been put in place to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two (2) days of the registration exercise.
The Commission aims to ensure that all eligible voters who wish to register areafforded the opportunity to do so. We urge all eligible citizens who have yet to register to visit the Commission’s office in the district where they reside to register to vote.”
The ongoing exercise aims at registering approximately 623,000 first-time voters across the country, but the EC says it is prepared to go beyond that figure.
