The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has advised all motorists to use additional caution when driving on the country’s numerous roads during the rainy season.
The PRO of the NRSA, Pearl Adusu Sateckla, said the Authroity is still rolling out its Drive Alive campaign.
She explained that the rain can reduce or impair the driver’s view of the road, hence the need to exercise caution.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she warned the rains have the potential to affect driving and increase the risk of road traffic crashes.
The PRO noted that drivers should ensure that their vehicles are in good condition, especially their wipers, tyres, reflectors, and lighting systems.
She said the rainy season comes along with hazy weather conditions affecting visibility, bad road networks, and overflowing gutters and drainages.
These situations, she added, render some roads non-motorable with debris and flooding, hence the need for motorists to drive with caution.
“The rainy season is not an ordinary time. It comes with hazy weather conditions, and that affects visibility. It is therefore required of drivers and road users to remain vigilant as they drive on all roads with the onset of the rain.”
She also advised drivers to avoid flooded roads and reduce their speed where necessary in order to minimise the risk associated with driving during this season.
“The NRSA urges vehicles to slow speed, maintain a safe following distance, turn on lights, and avoid crossing flooded areas. They should also guarantee that automobiles are roadworthy. “Before embarking on the ride, check the lights, wipers, windscreens, brakes and tyres.
Avoid starting the journey if it begins to rain. Wait until the rains have passed. If you’re already on your journey and the rain starts, choose a secure place to park your car to help reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.
