Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party UK Branch, believes that a man who delivered Kayayei head pans should not be elected president again.
He said if Ghanaians want a president with a vision, a leader with policies and programmes aimed at transforming the lives of the deprived, then we should look no further than Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Commenting on the recently commissioned hostel and vocational training facilities for female head porters, popularly known as Kayayei, the politician noted that the initiative was laudable.
He argued that it takes a man with a long-term vision to initiate such a project.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the United Kingdom, he said “we had a government in our history that saw it prudent and thought it was wise to gove head porters head pans.
Former President John Mahama was not the MP; he was not the Vice President but a sitting President, yet he could find nothing prudent and better to give to Kayayei, who went through several hardships and pain, but head pans.
This is not a man who compares to Dr. Bawumia. Dr. Bawumia is a Vice President who partnered with President Akufo-Addo, and through his efforts, we have seen the commissioning of this ultramodern hostel facility, which would provide skills and vocational training for the Kayayei.
“We are a party of people with vision. Mahama was an assemblyman; he became an MP, a Vice President, a caretaker President, and subsequently a President, and yet, when he had the opportunity to give Kayayei something, he only gave them head pans. Someone like Mahama does not deserve to be the president of Ghana again.”
He added that such a leader is not qualified to manage the affairs of the country since he lacks the needed skills and technical knowledge to roll out policies to help transform the lives of the people.
“The commission is not only extraordinary. It is a facility that will help train the Kayayei with skills that will help them set up their own businesses. The one who led this initiative, Dr. Bawumia, is the one who deserves to be our next president.”
The Vice President and presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on May 21, 2024 commisisoned the Kayayei Empowerment Training Centre, at Madina in Accra.
The Centre features two training rooms, three pantries, a kitchen, a clinic, 15 washrooms, five dormitories, fire extinguishers, CCTV, 24/7 security, and a food shed.
The key objective of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme is to provide head porters with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
The programme is expected to train 5,000 girls between May and November 2024 with 600 Kayayei per cohort each month and provide practical skills and knowledge to participants to prepare them for specific trades and occupations.
