The Majority in Parliament has slammed the Minority in Parliament for rejecting the $350 million tax waiver requests for some 42 companies under the 1D1F initiative.
The Majority described this as hypocrisy on the part of the Minority.
The Leader of the Minority, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on the floor of parliament during the recent emergency sitting, questioned the basis for such waivers when the government is in dire need of funds as a result of the economic crisis.
But addressing the parliamenatry press corps in parliament, majority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin took at the Minority.
He referenced similar waivers that were granted under former President John Dramani Mahama, which he said ran into billions of dollars for MPS and Gyata Cement, some of which.
He stressed that former President Mahama used his executive powers to waive taxes for these companies, indicating that they are strategic investors.
He claimed that some of these waivers were granted without parliamentary approval.
He narrated that Minority Leader Casiel Ato Forson is leading the charge on behalf of the minority to deny the people of Ghana economic growth.
He has, however, urged the minority to cooperate in order to exempt taxes on these 42 Ghanaian companies to ease the burden on the ordinary Ghanaian and also help economic growth.
