A man believed to be in his 5s, by the name of George Mwoah, aka Atta Kwaku, is currently battling for his life at Wamfie Government Hospital after falling into a well at Wamanafo Kwaku Twumasikrom in the Dormaa East District of the Bono East Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim fell down the well while attempting to rescue a dog that had fallen in.
He was hired by the owner of the dog due to his experience as a well-digger.
But unfortunately, Atta Kwaku got trapped and had to be rescued by personnel from the fire service.
Confirming the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Station Officer 1, Mr. Samuel Agyei of Dormaa Fire Station, said they received a distress call about the incident and had to deploy men to the scene.
“The story is true. We received a distress call from the police at around 7:49 p.m. that a man had fallen into a well and we should go and rescue him. We deployed men to the scene and saw him in the well.
He was contacted by some hunters who had gone hunting, and their dog fell into the well. But unfortunately, he nearly lost his life.”
He said the name that was originally given to them was Atta Kwaku, but the name on his Ghana card was George Amoah, 53.
The fire official further revealed that the well was once used by cocoa farmers who lived in the area.
He said the well is deep; hence, they had to use a long rope together with their ladder before they were able to rescue the man.
He also disclosed that the dog had fortunately lost its life since it was trapped and could not be rescued.
Station Officer 1, Mr. Samuel Agyei, told the news team that the incident occurred around 3:00 pm in the afternoon, and those who contracted him to rescue the dog made several attempts to rescue him but failed.
They later informed the police, who also called the Fire Service.
“The incident happened about 3 p.m. However, we received a call from the police at 7:49 p.m. that evening. The period between the occurrence and when we received the distress call was extremely long, and the man may have died. If it had been a different person, the person would have died. However, he is an experienced individual who has been doing this work for years, so his experience may have helped him survive,” he noted.
He stated that the man is now responding to treatment.
