The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Aboagye DaCosta, has announced plans by the outfit to collaborate with the government to buy dialysis machines for some public hospitals to help with kidney treatment.
He explained that the move will play a role in ensuring basic health is provided for all.
The NHIA is currently rolling out an initiative that provides all eight dialysis sessions per month for free under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for kidney patients aged below 18 and those over 60 years old.
The NHIA CEO indicated that the government has a clear plan to sustain the support programme intended to help renal patients across the country.
“The government do have a clear sustainability plan which will be unveiled and as I have it even includes seeing how we can support some facilities with dialysis machines, and how we can move on to the other forms.
“It is a comprehensive one so this will even serve as a learning for us in improving what we are going to put in place as a government.
Parliament in March approved GHC6.87 billion for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) to cover health insurance claims and other activities for the year.
The approval included, for the first time, emergency support for needy dialysis patients as part of the 2024 distribution formula.
About GHC2 million out of the amount has been allocated for the dialysis treatment of kidney patients in some public health facilities.
