A taxi driver has given a chilling account of how a suspected armed man attacked a young lady around the Achimota Forest.
The driver, in his narration, said the attacker inflicted wounds on the victim and robbed her of her phone and other valuables.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he disclosed that the screams from the young lady were what drew his attention to the incident.
According to the driver, he was from Dworwulu heading to Lapaz, and upon reaching the Achimota roundabout, from where you will head to the police station and the forest, I heard a lady screaming for help. I initially thought she was having fun with someone, but it was an armed man who had attacked her and snatched her phone and other valuables. The armed man had also inflicted wounds on her,” he revealed.
The driver further narrated that the incident was a scary one, and the victim could have died.
“I drove towards the scene, stepped out of my car, and offered an assistence. However, the attacker fled the scene into the forest. The lady sustained a deep cut under the eye, so I had to send her to the police station, where she was issued a police medical form. I took her to the hospital and later left. The doctors informed her that the deep cut would have to be stitched.”
The driver appealed to authorities to intensify patrols in the area since some miscreants have taken advantage of their absence to engage in these criminal activities.
He said, “The police were previously patrolling the area, but they have stopped, and that has created an opportunity for these armed men to attack people and steal from them. It took the grace of God; otherwise, the young lady would have lost her life. The area does not also have street lights and becomes dark at night. I am therefore appealing to the police to intensify patrols in the area to help save lives. The lady he added have her name as Josephine and a national service personnel”.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive for Okaikwei North, Nii Boye Laryea, described the incident as unfortunate.
He advised the public to avoid using the area at night since it was risky.
He disclosed that the Municipal Assembly had on several occasions advised the public, especially those who use the forest for prayers and other related activities at night, to stop doing so since it would expose them to danger.
He said some people always claim that they are prayerful, so they are not afraid of the attacks.
He stressed that although prayers were important, taking your personal security and safety seriously was crucial.
