The Municipal Chief Executive for Okaikwei North, Nii Boye Laryea, has advised the people, particularly those who use the Achimota roundabout and the forest area at night, to refrain from doing so.
He revealed that the Municipal Assembly had constantly advised people, particularly those who use the forest for prayers and other activities, to avoid doing so since it would put them in danger.
He stated that certain people always profess to be devout, thus they are not afraid of attacks.
He stressed that although prayers were important, taking your personal security and safety seriously was crucial.
Nii Boye Laryea was responding to an attack on a national service personnel by an armed man around the Achimota roundabout Tuesday evening.
It took the intervention of a taxi driver to rescue the young lady.
The MCE, reacting to the issue, described it as unfortunate.
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the Municipal Assembly has consistently advised people to avoid using the area at night considering the danger associated with it.
He said “we had advised the public to stop using the area at night because it creates an opportunity for thieves and armed men to attack people. This is not a new activity. We have worked with the police in the past to arrest suspected criminals there. We have asked those who use the place at night and those who organise church activities at night in the forest to stop doing so. But when you advise them, they will tell you they are believers and trust that God will not allow any harm to come to them.
We have not asked anyone to stop worshipping God. But practical is practical. The distance between God and us is very wide, and so as a Christian, aside from your faith, you should take your personal security seriously and protect yourself. You have a role to play because being safe is very important and should not be compromised for anything. I would want to stress that the public should avoid using the area after 5 p.m. because these criminals operate at that time. They observe and carry out their criminal activities when the place is dark and the police are not around.”
He added that the police patrol the area, but the criminals monitor and strike when the police are not around.
“The most important thing is that you prioritise your personal security above anything else. Do not use the area at night. Protect yourself and take security seriously. Those who go there to pray at night should understand that, while prayers are vital, so is your security, and prayers will not always save you from these criminals,” he emphasised.
