Fire has gutted several structures at ECOMOG, a suburb behind Circle, in the Greater Accra Region.
The structures have been burned to ashes, with several valuables destroyed.
Reporting from the area, Rainbow Radio’s Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi indicated that the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
He said on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said personnel from the Fire Service were at the scene to put out the fire.
He added that some sachet water sellers in the neighbourhood had also been affected.
He noted that the fire personnel had a lot of difficulty accessing the scene.
Some eyewitnesses he spoke with stated that female commercial workers occupy the bulk of the structures in the area.
The eyewitnesses claimed that the commercial sex workers have been evicted several times, but they keep returning.
“We were here when we learned that there was an outbreak. Calls were made to the fire service, but some who called said they were delayed. Because the majority of the structures here are made of wood, the fire spread fast from its starting point to other locations. Most of the wooden structures are occupied by commercial sex workers. Their activities are a nuisance, and efforts to remove them have failed,” an eyewitness stated.
Others alleged that some occupants of the structures died as a result of being unable to escape the fire when it began because they were asleep.
However, that account has yet to be confirmed by GNFS officials.
