The fire outbreak at ECOMOG, Nkrumah Circle, claimed no life – GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has denied claims that a fire that gutted several wooden structures at ECOMOG, a suburb of Kwame Nkrumah, took lives.

Some eyewitnesses had alleged that some occupants of the structures died as a result of being unable to escape the fire when it began because they were asleep.

However, the GNFS says there was no casualty recorded.

AC FO 1Mr. Timothy Affum, the GNFS’s Public Relations Officer, stated on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that there were no casualties recorded by the organisation.

Fire gutted several structures at ECOMOG, a suburb behind Circle, in the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

The structures were burnt to ashes, with several valuables destroyed.

The PRO for the GNFS said over 95 percent of the structures at the scene were wooden and so could not stand the outbreak.

He also refuted claims that personnel from the service delayed arriving at the scene.

“When we arrived at the scene, we learned that the fire had begun a long time ago, and when the first tender came, he requested backup because the fire was blazing. We added four more tenders to the scene. Several structures and valuables were destroyed, but we were able to control the fire and keep it from spreading further. Over 95% of the structures were made of wood, so when the fire started, it spread quickly. The location is also a slum, thus the most of the structures would be made of wood. Several structures were destroyed, but we handled the problem.

In responding to what caused the outbreak, he said, “It was too early to know. We are currently conducting an investigation to identify what caused the fire outbreak. We cannot determine what triggered the fire. We are presently investigating the cause.”
