The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged that the military be barred from polling booths in the next parliamentary elections on December 7.
He made the pronouncement in his opening speech in Parliament on Tuesday, June 11, Bagbin stated the military must remain away from polling or voting stations until they are called in to deal with a situation.
The Speaker stated that if it is essential to call them, they will be called; nevertheless, they should remain away from polling locations during the elections.
“We don’t want to see [the] military during the election. When there is a need to call them, they will be called, but they should not be at polling or voting centres.
“Honourable members, the clergy and notable civil society leaders will be actively involved. The signs and signals of happiness in the country are not those of assurance and hope.”
To that aim, he has announced Parliament’s plans to involve the President, presidential candidates from other political parties, security agencies, and other stakeholders in discussions about how to achieve free, fair, and credible elections.
