Sekou Nkrumah, a political activist, says it’s time for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be removed from office due to their poor performance.
He decried Ghanaians’ economic misery and emphasised the necessity for voters to show the NPP the way out.
He recounted the astronomical prices of commodities the last time he came to Ghana, saying Ghanaians are really going through tough times and everyone seems to be complaining.
He described the current prices of commodities as horrifying, stressing that it would be a mistake to retain the NPP in power.
“The last time I was in Ghana, the prices were horrifying, and I couldn’t believe it. I think they should be on their way out,” he told Dr. Ren on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the United Kingdom via a Zoom interview.
When asked if he did not agree with those who have called for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be given a shot at the presidency, he said, “Not from where I stand. My impression was that a lot of people are not happy”.
He argued that a president’s term of four years may not be sufficient for significant accomplishments, citing Ghanaians adding an additional four years but a party failing to make significant progress after eight years should be voted out.
“I understand that four years might be a short time, so we give you four more years, and then, if there are no serious changes, you have to go.”
The writer went on to say that it makes no difference if the NDC or the NPP is in power; what matters is that we pick leaders who are accountable and prepared to do what is necessary to propel the country forward.
He said one of the major problems we have to deal with is corruption, adding that persons who engage in corruption ought to be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent, irrespective of the party in office.
The state he emphasised must go after every corrupt official, whether their party is in power or not.
This, he added, is not witch hunting but an attempt to rid our society of corruption.
The level of corruption he lamented has exceeded the era where people were shot and killed over alleged corruption cases.
He was concerned that a country that had previously killed several people due to corruption was still struggling with the problem.
