The Central Regional Chief Imam has advised politicians not to rely on the Zongo youth for their political violence in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
The Islamic cleric noted that the youth are not agents of violence; hence, politicians should desist from luring them into engaging in their lawlessness.
He made the remarks on Sunday, June 16, 2024, when Muslims across the country marked the 2024 Eid-ul-Adha.
According to him, they have advised the youth in the various Muslim communities to stay away from any activities that will result in violence.
He also used the opportunity to caution the two presidential candidates of the NPP and NDC, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama, to ensure a clean campaign, which will help Ghanaians enjoy the peace we have in the country.
“We’re preparing for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. Politicians occasionally utilise young Zongo youth to carry out acts of violence. But we don’t want to tolerate lawlessness this year. We have encouraged our youth not to let any politician use them for violence. Islam encourages and advocates peace. We’re not violent people. We want peace and stability, especially as we prepare for elections. As Muslims and non-Muslims, it is our job to vow peace and preserve the country’s stability and protection. We have nowhere else to go if this country is destabilised.”
Meanwhile, the Chief of Yalwa Zongo in Agona Swedru, Alhaji Bashir Tahir II, has also urged the youth to desist from political violence.
He says that Zongo communities can now boost the number the number of graduates, so they will not entertain any politician to plan violence with their youth.
We have graduates from the Zongo villages. The claim that our children dislike going to school is untrue. Our Zongo communities are home to various graduates. I urge our youth to refrain from indulging in violence.”
