John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised that if elected president on December 7, 2024, mining in forest reserves will be forbidden.
He cautioned that under the future NDC government, Ghana’s forest reserves would be off-limits to those intending to conduct mining activities.
Mr. Mahama stated that the discovery of natural resources should not be at the expense of protecting the country’s vegetative cover.
He promised that the new NDC government would support responsible mining and ensure that water bodies contaminated by unlawful mining activities were restored to their original state.
He said this during a public a public lecture at Kumasi’s Christian Service University.
He believes that our forest reserves are more valuable than any minerals found beneath them and will not allow any actions that will diminish them.
“I will ban all mining in forest reserves because I believe that many of the trees in the reserves, which are more than 700 years old, are more precious assets than any mineral that lies beneath them.”
