The Tamale High Court has issued an order against Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, prohibiting him from portraying himself as the New Patriotic Party’s chosen parliamentary candidate (PC) for the Walewale constituency in the North East Region.
The court, presided over by Justice Richard Kugyapaw, issued the order today, Monday, June 24, 2024.
Incumbent Member of Parliament for the Constituency, Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, went to court to challenge the results declared in favour of Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru during the parliamenatry primary by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, defeated the incumbent MP in the fiercely contested election.
He won the election with 345 votes, compared to Hajia Lariba’s 338 votes.
But the MP went to court to challenge the results and lodged an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court.
She accused the NPP, Dr. Kabiru, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities and misconduct.
She prayed the court to grant an injunction to stop Dr. Kabiru from declaring himself the elected candidate, a request that has now been granted.
