Founder of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has served notice of organising a demsontration should authorities fail to insure personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
She announced that she will mobilise commercial drivers to hit the streets and protest against the inspection of insurance by personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) if officers if all Police officers are not insured.
She opined that it was not prudent for officers of the security agency to be working under this condition.
The job of a police officer, she said, was risky, and yet, authorities have not given them any form of insurance to protect their lives.
“I would encourage trotro drivers and other commercial drivers to join this demonstration so that we will protest the police for checking insurance when they have not been insured. When you travel abroad, police personnel have been insured, so when they step out to work, they know they have been insured.
The job of police officers and other security personnel, including soldiers and immigration officers, is risky. If it comes to the security agencies, it is between life and death. Because the police interact with Ghanaians, we have to insure them,” she said while appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
She added that this campaign is not aimed at encouraging drivers not to insure their vehicles, but the police, who are the main agents of forcing drivers to insure their vehicles, should be insured, and most importantly, the insurance companies must take up the challenge.
She encouraged the private security agencies to engage with the police administration on the best way to provide packages for police officers.
