Tell NAPO we want to know his position on ‘trumu trumu’ – Coalition

The Executive Secretary of the Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values has asked Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the yet-to-be officially named running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to be prepared to state his position on the controversial LGBTQI+ issue.

The private legal practitioner, Mr. Foh Amoaning, said it was important for him to state his position on the matter so the Coalition and religious groups in the country would know his stance.

He asserted that the presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia, who has settled on him as his running mate, has publicly declared his stance on the topic and it was proper for him (NAPO) to also state his position.

He was also quick to add that the running mate of former President John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, must also declare her position after Mr. Mahama expressed his opposition to the matter.

He further disclosed that the Coalition will demand all other presidential candidates and their running mates to also state their positions before the upcoming December 7 presidential and parliamenatry elections.

He said this during a gathering hosted by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) and the Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights Value, which urged President Akufo-Addo to sign the anti-gay bill into law.

“Former President John Dramani Mahama has already declared his stance on the matter. He has already told us he is against it. He did so on January 31. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has also declared that he is against it. But I have not heard from Alan Kyerematen on the matter. He claims to be a Christian and Christlike, but we have not heard from him. “If you are really Christlike, then I am humbly appealing to you to demonstrate your Christlikeness and declare your position on the matter,” he said.

He also informed all of the other presidential candidates that religious groups and the Coalition would demand their positions on the issue, as well as the vice presidential candidates.

“We will not only demand the positions of the presidential candidates but also their vice presidential candidates. So if you see NAPO, tell him that we are coming to see him and demand his position on the matter. We will also demand the position of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and all the other vice presidential candidates.”

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has set July 17, 2024, to rule on Dr. Amanda Odoi’s application for an interlocutory injunction against the transmission of the anti-gay bill to the presidency by Parliament.

The court said that another application filed by media personality and lawyer Richard Dela Sky would also be addressed on the same day.

The announcement came after arguments from the plaintiffs’ lawyers, the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, and Thaddeus Sory, who is the counsel for the Speaker of Parliament.

The chair of the five-member panel, Chief Justice Getrude Torkornoo, stressed that the court will not undertake a composite ruling.
She explained that the apex court will give different rulings in the two cases.

The other panel members are Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice Ernest Gaewu, and Justice Yaw Darko Asare.
