Mr. Stephen Atubiga, Founder and Leader of the National Liberation Congress (NLC), has declared that Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang lacks political experience to run with former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential election.
He admitted that the former Education Minister distinguished herself in all aspects of her life, but she is not the type of politician who can partner with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for victory in 2024.
He said Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is far more experienced politically than the NDC’s running and understands the terrain and grassroots better than Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.
“Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is a very beautiful woman. She has learned. She has what it takes. She inspires a lot of women in Ghana. She is one of the most seasoned educators in Ghana. But at this moment, she isn’t fit to partner with John Dramani Mahama in the presidential election and manage the country. She doesn’t have what it takes. She is a technocrat, but not a politician. There are some politicians who may not have technocratic knowledge, but when you appoint them, they will be able to rally behind you and get things done,” he argued.
Mr. Stephen Atubiga said the former Energy Minister is a seasoned politician.
“He is not an ordinary person. He is a grassroots person. I am comparing the two politically. The difference between the two is that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is like someone who taps palm wine, whereas NAPO is like the Johnny Walker brand. This comparison is about their political experience. NAPO is like an expensive brand politically. He knows how to build people; he knows how to carry people along with him; he has a listening ear; and he has built himself around the people. Let no one misinterpret my submission. I am not comparing them based on their educational achievements. I am talking about their political experience, and NAPO has that superior advantage over Prof. Opoku-Agyemang,” he said.
He added that NAPO has a track record and has successfully managed the Energy Ministry, which is the heartbeat of the economy.
He said you cannot compare the management of the Education Ministry to the Energy Ministry.
He said any lunatic can manage the education sector or ministry based on the manifesto of the party.
But the energy sector requires much more since you are working commercially with stakeholders and should be smart enough not to create challenges.
He stressed that the running mate of the NDC lacks charisma and political attraction. The woman doesn’t have it at the moment.
He said the NDC should have considered a Muslim on the ticket and also considered regional balance in selecting his running mate.
When asked why he was so concerned about issues in the NDC than his newly formed party, he said, “That is right. It is so because our mother is the NDC. We broke away from the NDC to form a replica of the NDC as a socialist party. We informed our founder of the NDC before he passed. Our dream is to live an example of how a solialist party like our mother party is supposed to be. If we fail to criticise the party, it will defeat the reason why we established the NLC,” he noted.
