Political analyst Samuel Boateng has advised African politicians, particularly those in Ghana, to display leadership, integrity, selflessness, and patriotism in carrying out their tasks in order to avoid being targeted in either their personal or political lives.
Using the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump as an example, he suggested that the incident may be politically motivated or related to his private life.
Mr. Boateng was of the view that the incident may not be politically motivated as some have claimed, adding that since the man has a private life, he may have been a target for some people he stepped on and used that opportunity to take him out.
He argued that we cannot decouple politics from what happened, but we cannot also use politics as the only reason for the assassination attempt on the life of Donald Trump. It may be politically motivated, but we cannot also rule out other factors.”
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he said some have even suggested that the assassination attempt was orchestrated by his political rivals. But that has not been established. If we are to learn lessons from what happened, our political leaders in Africa, particularly in Ghana, should demonstrate leadership at all levels. Some people may have differences with you both in your private life and political life.”.
Mr. Samuel Boateng said the incident has also not tarnished the image of America, which is seen as a democratic country and has been used as a shining example over the past few years.
He noted that we can only continue to learn from their best practices and avoid those that do not align with ours.
“The democracy in America has not been affected by this. But if, with all their sophisticated security systems, an attempt is made on the life of a former president, then we have a lot to learn from it as Africans. If we are to learn lessons from this, we should demonstrate accountable leadership as political officeholders and be people of integrity in our personal lives. We can easily be targets both politically and in our private activities.”
On Saturday, July 13, 2014, Donald Trump escaped an assassination attempt.
The former President of the United States of America attended a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a hamlet north of Pittsburgh.
He was not gravely injured, but the gunman was fatally shot by security personnel.
One bystander also died, and two more sustained serious injuries at the rally.
The shooter was later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old Bethel Park, Pennsylvania resident.
