Security analyst Mr. Adib Saani has opined that Ghana can learn useful lessons from the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump by prioritising the security and safety of former heads of state.
He recounted the death of former Vice President Ackah, who he said died in a dastardly accident.
He mentioned the gun-wielding man who entered a church and wanted to allegedly shoot former President John Dramani Mahamanas another example to support his argument.
He averred that the assassination attempt on the former United States President is not surprising considering its political history and the number of assassinations and attempts on political leaders.
He concluded that it is more prevalent practice, particularly in a society with a gun population, than in a human population.
He encouraged Ghana to learn useful lessons from what has happened by putting measures in place to protect our former leaders.
“We have useful lessons to learn as a country. We have to prioritise the security and safety of our former heads of state. Former presidents John Agyekum Kufour and John Dramani Mahama are still alive. If we fail to prioritise their security, tomorrow you will also become a former president. We remember that in the early 2000s, former Vice President Ackah died in a terrible mananer through an accident in Cantonments, and till date, we don’t know about the identity of the other person.
We can also remember the incident involving former President John Dramani Mahama, who was in a church auditorium in Achimota only for his security detail to identify that there was someone wielding a gun. It would have been worse.”
The incident teaches us a crucial lesson about political rhetoric, as every Ghanaian has a unique thought process for evaluating politicians’ comments, according to the analyst.
Well-informed individuals can perceive certain political comments as pure political talk, while others may react differently.
“Political rhetoric is extremely important.” You and I are well-informed, and when they speak, for example, Chairman Wontumi recently remarked that the NPP has a thousand ways to win an election. This can be understood by you and me as political language. However, there are a lot of mad individuals out there, excuse my language, and when this reaches the ears of a mad man, that person will take it at face value and do the inconceivable. So we must proceed with caution as we approach the December elections, since whatever you say has direct ramifications for your followers’ mental processes and attitudes,” he stated.
He stressed the necessity of protecting former leaders, noting that we often leave it in the hands of party members, which he regarded as a poor situation.
“It is not advisable to continue entrusting former leaders of state’s protection to party boys. It is harmful and could cause a negative reaction. I hope this does not happen, and hence we should be proactive. So I am urging National Security to prioritise the safety and security of former leaders of state.”
