President of the National Paralympic Committee – Ghana, Samson Deen, has revealed in a media interview that his signature was forged clear a group of Ghanaian para-athletes to travel to Norway to represent the nation in this year’s Bergren Marathon.
Nine members of a ‘paralympic team’ from Ghana are allegedly on the run following accusations of impersonation.
Information available indicates that a letter from National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah detailed how the nine individuals went on the run.
The nine are said to have obtained visas from the Norwegian Embassy in Accra to participate in the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon in Oslo on April 27 this year.
The team of athletes arrived in Oslo on April 25, 2024, for the marathon.
However, it was discovered that the 11-member team failed to register for the competition, which was to be held two days after their arrival.
A member of the team, Nana Antwi, was arrested a day after their arrival for attempting to depart Norway for Sweden on a one-way train ticket.
The coach of this ‘team’, George Gyamfi Gyasi, is said to have died shortly after being admitted to the Oslo University Hospital (ULEVAL) following his collapse on April 28, 2024.
Reacting to this, Samson Deen denied knowledge of the persons identified in the letter.
He maintained that his signature was forged in the visa application letter used by the alleged Ghanaian representatives.
“We want to make things clear that the Ghana Paralympic Team has not applied for a visa, never has anybody, never has the NPC-Ghana, never have I signed any letter for and on behalf of the Ghana Paralympic Team and never have we or any of our assigns or officers of the Ghana Paralympic Team or the NPC-Ghana have applied for a visa at the Norwegian Embassy. What you have seen in the media is a forged letter.”
“I want to appeal to the people of Ghana that the pictures, the stories that are going viral have nothing to do with any member or anyone they see in the picture, none of them are involved, or have or are associated to these people. The letters that were sent with my signature on them were forged,” he said.
