The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says the seven fire officers who were involved in a near-fatal accident while on their way to put out a fire were responding to treatment.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for the GNFS DOIII Desmond Ackah confirmed this in an interview.

He said the accident occurred Sunday morning at approximately 09:08 hours, with personnel from the service station in Kade, in the Eastern Region, involved.

The firefighters were aboard Fire Engine (FS 438), which was on its way in response to an emergency call from another officer, he said.

He noted that the incident resulted in injuries to seven crew members, who are now receiving medical attention at St. Dominic’s Hospital and Kade Government Hospital.

He told host Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that the tender involved in the accident is a 13-year-old tender.

He admitted that the service was committed to providing its constitutionally mandated services to Ghanaians despite the several constraints they face.

He said they have consistently appealed to the government to provide them with the needed logistics to make them more efficient and effective.

“It is true that a fire tender was responding to an emergency in the area. There were eight people on board, but one escaped unhurt. The other seven sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital, where they are responding to treatment. The fact-finding committee will go to the scene to gather information, but later, another committee will be established to investigate the cause of the accident,” he stated.

The accident was unfortunate, and we pray that our personnel who were involved in the accident will recover fully and resume work. The entire staff of the GNFS is solidly behind them with prayers, and we hope they will recover,” he noted.

He stressed that the tender that was involved in the accident was brought into the country in 2011 and has been damaged.

He, however, assured them that the damaged tender would not affect their activities.
