A Deputy Ranking Member on the Education of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has called on the government to address the concerns raised by the teachers of the Colleges of Education so they will call off their strike action.

The leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association has served notice that it will resist any illegal attempts to freeze members’ salaries, vowing to intensify its indefinite strike until the arbitral award and negotiated service conditions are implemented.

They claim their strike action was legal, and it was rather the National Labour Commission misinforming the public about its actions.
Commenting on the issue, Dr. Clement Apaak, the Member of Parliament, stated that it was unfortunate that the government has failed to address the concerns of CETAG.

He noted that if the issues are not addressed, it will disrupt the progress of the students and disrupt the academic calendar.

He said it was important for the issues to be addressed so our teachers would resume teaching.

In a brief statement he said “We again call on the government to meet its obligations to the lecturers so that they can return to the classroom. If this impass is not resolved sooner, it will disrupt the progress of the students and dislodge the academic calendar”.

Our colleges of Education Lecturers [CETAG] have been on strike since the 14th of June 2024, and there seems to be no end in sight.

According to CETAG, the strike has been occasioned by a number of factors. However, the bone of contention is the refusal of the employer [government] to implement an arbitration award granted to CETAG by the NLC in relation to the transition from diploma awarding teacher training colleges, five year ago, to degree awarding colleges of education.

We again call on the government to meet its obligations to the lecturers so that they can return to the classroom. If this impass is not resolved sooner, it will disrupt the progress of the students and dislodge the academic calendar.
