Acting Secret Service Director Donald L. Rowe Jr. testified before the United States Senate today, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, on the assassination attempt on former United States President Donald Trump.
In his testimony, he admitted the assassination attempt on the former president was a failure at all levels.
He explained that a critical part of the Secret Service mission is protecting “our nation’s current and former government leaders. The attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday, July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania, was a failure on multiple levels.”
He admitted responsibility and condemned the unfortunate incident, saying, “I join you in condemning the horrific assault on former President Trump, Corey Comperatore, James Copenhaver, and David Dutch.”
Donald L. Rowe Jr. extended his deepest sympathy to the Comperatore family and his sincere wishes for Mr. Copenhaver’s and Mr. Dutch’s continued recovery.
He further commended what he described as the heroic actions of the men and women of the United States Secret Service on the day of the incident.
He claimed that Special Agents of the Secret Service sheltered and defended the former president with their bodies while gunfire were still being fired.
According to him, they made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting the former president without any hesitation.
He said, “I am extremely proud of these actions and those taken by the countersniper team to neutralise the threats that prevented further loss of life.” And I applaud the actions of our tactical teams that responded so quickly. I would also want to express my gratitude to our federal, state, and local partners. We rely on these critical relationships, which we’ve developed over decades of daily collaborations, to secure protective events and conduct criminal investigations.”
He told the Senate of the ongoing multiple investigations into the security failures on the day, pledging his full support to those inquiries so the Secret Service, the Committees, and the American people can have a thorough and complete understanding of what happened leading up to the incident on July 13, 2024.
