The Chiefs and people of Nkroful have pardoned Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the recent comments he made about the ate Dr. Kwame Nkrumah when he was outdoors in Kumasi.
On July 8, 2024, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh delivered his first public statement during his ceremonial outdooring ceremony in Kumasi, stating that since Ghana’s establishment in 1957, no president has made more outstanding development than President Akufo-Addo.
The former Energy Minister, who was appointed during Akufo-Addo’s first tenure as Education Minister, stated that not even Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s record can compare to that of Akufo-Addo.
Some chiefs of Nkroful, the hometown of Ghana’s first president, asked him to apologise or not step foot in the area to campaign.
During his tour of the Nzemaland, NAPO paid a courtesy call on the Chiefs where he apologised.
“As a child, I lived with Nzema people. I and the Nzema people are the same people. I will never disrespect Nkrumah in any manner, and anyone who does will suffer the consequences of their actions.
“Nkrumah accomplished so much for the country. I was misunderstood, but I apologised to Ghanaians, and I’m standing here before you again to sorry for my statements; pardon me, we’re all one people,” NAPO stated.
The chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua reacting to the apology said “NAPO’s comments were widely condemned by Ghanaians as uncalled for. We applaud Ghanaians’ deeds and express our gratitude. We must realise that Nkrumah performed an excellent job for the country.
“We are a peaceful people who do not tolerate violence and do not want anarchy to arise in Ghana as a result of the Nzema people. We heard that NAPO apologised to Ghanaians for his remarks. However, he needed to visit to Nzema to personally apologise to the traditional authorities and reiterate his sorrow.
“Today, he has asked for forgiveness from the chiefs, this is what we have all been waiting for, and so we accept his apology.”
