The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that 12 people have submitted their names to contest the presidential election as independent candidates.
According to the electoral body, so far, 12 individuals have submitted their names to them with the aim of contesting the elections.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, who was the Director of Electoral Services and now head of the Training Department, disclosed this interview.
He also disclosed that there are about 12 existing political parties currently recognised by the EC, and should all the parties file to contest and they are cleared by the EC to contest together with the independent candidates, we would have 24 candidates on the presidential ballot for 2024.
The EC will, from September 9 to September 13, this year, receive nominations for the elections of President and Members of Parliament (MPs).
This is pursuant to Regulations 6, 7, and 8 of the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127).
The filing fees for presidential candidates are GH¢100,000 and GH¢10,000 for parliamentary candidates.
The EC said female presidential candidates and persons with disability were required to pay GH¢75,000.
A statement that was recently issued and signed by the Deputy Chairman in- Charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, disclosed that interested candidates were required to download the nomination forms from the EC’s website at https://ec.gov.gh/forms.
However, all prospective candidates who wish to contest the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections as independent candidates should contact the commission for a passcode.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, speaking in the media interview, stated that the recession is still ongoing and that there is a likelihood for the numbers to increase.
When asked if all the candidates would be passed to contest, he said it would be biassed on his part to make that pronouncement.
