Former Director of Communications at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho, has underscored the need for political parties to properly train their agents who represent them during elections.
In his first authored book, ‘Umcomprising Thoughts: Leafing Out National Issues’, the author identified planning and strategising as the surest way of winning an election and not the dependence on the EC to rig elections in one’s favour.
On pages 96 and 97 of the book, the author notes that it would be prudent for the political parties to invest in training their agents to master the electoral processes.
He said in the book that if the answer to the question “Does the EC have the capacity to rig elections in favour of political parties? is yes, then that would be possible if the political parties conspire to position agents who know next to nothing about the electoral processes.
“With the existing voting and counting system in Ghana, political parties must invest in training agents who have the capacity to master the procedures and processes governing the electoral chain. The question is: does the Electoral Commission of Ghana have the capacity to rig elections in favour of political parties? If the answer is yes, then that would only be possible if political parties conspire to position agents who know next to nothing about the electoral, voting, counting, and collating processes.
All said, when political parties lose elections in Ghana and continue to blame the EC and cry foul, it is because the parties refused to prepare adequately for “war.” If you know yourself, you will know your “enemy.” You will decide on the best way to defeat the “enemy.” Of course, as a human institution, the EC can be compromised, but that would only happen if a large number of political parties were ill-prepared.”
Mr. Anyidoho stated that political parties must realise that politicking and canvassing for votes is not a venture for cluelessness and empty propaganda because the art of winning elections is steeped in the scientific gathering and analysis of data. Planning and strategising are the surest ways of winning any election, not a dependence on the EC to rig elections in one’s favour.”
Among other things, the book is a chronicle of Koku’s experiences around President Atta-Mills and the Presidency, as well as some insights into the leadership style of the late President.
It also captures some aspects of President Jerry John Rawlings’s time as president and gives perspectives on how Koku continues to perceive the agenda of nation-building.
The story of how President Nana Akufo-Addo agreed to construct Asomdwe Park is succinctly illustrated.
The 200-page book is a compilation of articles written by Samuel Koku Anyidoho. The articles span across Ghana’s politics, education, religion, development, and international politics.
The opening chapter of the book takes the reader through a nostalgic journey through the lives through the lives of two of Ghana’s most impactful presidents, the late Jerry John Rawlings and the late John Evans Atta Mills.
The book contains a point of view that was once as close as possible to the ultimate seat of power on the land, and secondly, as a close observer of many decisions of subsequent seats of power. It is an unbending narrative, an unflinching account, and a must-read.
The book will also cause the reader to ask important questions about Ghana’s lagging development from various angles.
