The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has questioned why the Electoral Commission’s (EC) is charging registered voters a fee of GH₵0.50 to verify their registration details through a short code.
The lawmaker is wondering why registered voters are being asked to pay to verify their details.
He raised the concerns in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
The electoral body has announced to the general public that registered voters can confirm if their names are in the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 general election through a short code *71151# as an alternative means to going to the centres earmarked for the exhibition exercise.
The MP stated that voters should not be made to pay additional fees to verify their names in the voter register, even if the process is conducted electronically.
The MP also criticised the transparency of fee collection and the potential financial burden on voters.
The post on X read: “Why is the Electoral Commission levying a fee of Ghc0.50 every Registered Voter before the person can check his or her Name in the Provisional Register using the Short Code: 71151#? Who is getting these moneys? Parliament has already approved EC’s Budget for this Exercise. The People cannot be made to pay monies before they are permitted to cross check their names in the Voters Register, even if it’s by electronic means.”
The exhibition exercise started today, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, for registered voters to verify their details in the register ahead of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The activity takes place every day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., including Saturday and Sunday.
The EC has explained that the exercise will afford registered voters the opportunity to verify their voter details, such as name, sex, and age, among others, as captured during the registration exercise and make requests for amendments or insertions where necessary.
