The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has outlined six conditions under which it would sign a peace pact ahead of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The conditions were spelled out by the National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, when the leadership of the National Peace Council met with the party at its headquarters.
Leading the Peace Council, Mawuvi Bin Salin appealed to the political parties to eliminate any animosity and agree to forge peace as the general elections approached.
“For us to be able to do that, we will need your cooperation. For us to be able to do that, we will need some amount of goodwill and trust from the members of the committee. So with that goodwill and trust, we will be very encouraged to do the best that we can,” he said.
The National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, maintained that they will only sign the peace pact if, among other things, the President, Inspector-General of Police, Chief Justice, and Attorney General all sign the pact.
Mr. Nketiah said the NDC is not ready to “let bygones be bygones,” insisting that President Akufo-Addo must openly declare his commitment to respecting the outcome of the 2024 elections.
He said the NDC will not sign any agreement until the recommendations from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence investigation are fully implemented.
He also called for the prosecution of those responsible for violence during the 2020 elections and other associated irregularities.
He further demanded an investigation into the missing IT equipment from the Electoral Commission’s warehouse.
Mr. Nketiah outlined the conditions as follows:
“1. Let us see the full implementation of the investigations of the incident that occurred at Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency during the by election.
- We want to see initiation of prosecution in all the violence during the last election.
- We want to see prosecution for the printing of ballot papers. We have not heard anything on it. We want to see action otherwise they will do it again.
- The case of missing IT Equipment from the warehouse of the EC must be looked into. We believe they are not missing. Where are the equipment when the suspects were caught? Our confidence in the EC has been shaken. You need to put our hearts at rest that nothing untoward is happening with our IT systems. Look into it. Appointments to the EC too. We raised issues with that. We produced evidence that they were full of NPP people. They are still at the EC
- We want the President to state openly that he will respect the outcome of the 2024 elections.
- We want to see the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chief Justice (CJ), Attorney-General (A-G) and National Security Coordinator sign the peace pact before we see and sign that document,” Mr Nketia requested.
