Organised labour has proposed a constitutional amendment that will allow Ghana to practice a union government.
A leading member of organised labour, Isaac Bampoe, argued that when Ghana adopts this system of governance, it will ensure political stability and economic growth.
He proposed this at the 12th Quadrennial Conference at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region.
He expressed concern over the current system of winner-take-all and its negative impact on Ghana’s development.
He also discussed the president’s excessive powers, corruption, and other issues that he feels would be addressed if Ghana adopted union government.
“In assessing the benefits or otherwise of our current democratic dispensation, account should be taken of the following, namely, the voluntary spirit that is waning, patriotism and selflessness as against ethnocentrism, national cohesion vis a vis ethnocentric governance”.
“Corruption in all forms and indiscipline that has destroyed the fabric of our society, is it not time to consider introducing partnership in the structure of governance in Ghana? Is union government not a better alternative? Let us all begin to ponder over this,” he urged.
