Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the former presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed plans to reform the government scholarship program if elected.
The former president said this would be done to prevent individuals with conflicts of interest from applying.
Speaking at the launch of the Manefesto of the NDC, he said the Secretariat was originally developed to offer scholarships to underprivileged individuals but has been compromised by state officials who can afford to sponsor their wards.
To him, the application process is now a “kalabule” (deceit) and must be overhauled.
“Government scholarships have been fraught with a lot of ‘kalabule,’ meaning deceit. We want to streamline it, and as I’ve said, persons with conflicts of interest will not be allowed to apply for the scholarships. None of my ministers will do it.”
“Any political appointee must not apply for the scholarships, you must pay. Children under privilege, those who cannot afford it are the ones who must get the scholarship.”
