Deputy Communications Director of Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Frank Gyekye, has obtained credible information indicating that the company responsible for supplying and distributing laptops under the one-teacher-one laptop initiative has fully delivered all remaining devices to the Ghana Education Service (GES).
He said that with this new information, it is required for the GES to organise a mop-up exercise so all the teachers who have not received their laptops would receive them.
He was responding to a statement issued by the company, KA Technologies, that it has concluded its supply and distribution of the laptops under the initiative.
In a press statement dated September 1, 2024, the company said: “We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the nationwide supply, training, and subsequent distribution of computer laptops to qualified teachers (kindergarten, primary, junior, and senior high schools), teachers on study leave, and non-teaching staff under the Ghana Education Service (GES).
“We have communicated and published our 24/7 Aftercare Centres dotted across the country, providing continuous customer and technical assistance to our cherished teachers. Our user-friendly Katcare app allows the booking of repair services and the purchase of laptop accessories. Teachers may also call the toll-free line 0800790555 to report any complaints or inquiries,” it added.
Reacting, Mr. Frank Gyekye said some of the teachers had embarked on a strike action after their laptops were not distributed, especially at the primary level, after those in the junior and senior high secondary schools had received theirs.
He noted that the Labour Commission had also ruled that the GES should supply the laptops to all the teachers left by the end of June, but that could not materialise, and we are now in September. ‘’But as I speak to you now, we have gathered authentic information that KA Technologies has supplied all the remaining laptops to the GES. If that is the case, the GES must organise a mop-up exercise to ensure that all the teachers who have not received the laptops will receive theirs. There is a form going around for teachers who have yet to receive their laptops to fill out and submit them so they will receive their laptops.’’
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that more than 95% of teachers have received their laptops, with only a handful still awaiting theirs.
He has therefore stressed the need for the GES to ensure that all those who were yet to receive theirs receive them, adding that the schools are currently on vacation, and ”I am sure that they would receive theirs when school reopens”.
”I confirm that although not all teachers have received their laptops, the vast majority, representing 95% of the teaching workforce, have received theirs. Therefore, I suggest that the GES organizes a mop-up exercise to distribute the laptops to the outstanding recipients.”
