A group linked to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Patriot Ghana, has expressed the view that President Akufo-Addo should have resigned from his position in light of his unsuccessful efforts to curb illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The group, led by its founder and leader, Kwesi Korang, averred that for a president who put his presidency on the line and has failed in dealing with the canker, he must immediately resign from his job.
He was, however, disappointed that the type of politics practiced here in Ghana makes it difficult for President Akufo-Addo to make that bold decision.
President Akufo-Addo in 2017 served notice that he was prepared to put his presidency on the line in his avowed quest to fight illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.
Addressing a two-day workshop on galamsey for traditional leaders, the President said, “I have said it in the Cabinet, and perhaps this is the first time I am making this public, that I am prepared to put my Presidency on the line on this matter.”
“If, by the grace of God, my party allows me to go again and I have the health and everything to go again but do not get it again, then I will say to myself, ‘Well, this is a choice I have to make as a human being.’ Do you do what is right or what you think will make you get along? I think you do what is right and what you are required to do,” he added.
Mr. Korang proclaimed that the President’s vow has not been kept, and if we were sincerely focused on progress rather than partisanship, he should vacate his office with honor.
Speaking to Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said, ‘’After putting his presidency on the line, failing to deal with galamsey, if not for partisan politics, if we are to be nationalistic and passionate about national issues, then the president must resign today from office because he has failed woefully to deal with galamsey. He has failed, and I am disappointed. I always tell people that he has done his best for this country, but in terms of galamsey, he has failed to deliver and must resign immediately. He should resign and allow Bawumia to take over office’’.
