Residents in Asuokow, Krodua, Breman, Nyanowa, and Abam and 18 other communities in the Upper West Akim district of the Eastern region have been hit with water shortages due to illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey.
The residents told Rainbow Radio’s Prince Collins Bening that the situation is alarming because they cannot get access to clean drinking water.
The residents stated that the situation is threatening their lives since illegal miners are bodily destroying farms and water bodies and creating grounds for life-threatening diseases.
They have therefore called on the government to immediately put in measures addressing the situation.
Some of them had to buy water from other locations since all streams in the area have been polluted, including River Ayensu.
Nana Kofi Annor, the Mankrqdo of the area of Akyem Nyanowa, stated that all the chiefs and elders staying around the Ayesu River decided to meet their Paramount Chief Osagyefo Amotia Ofori Penyin at Akyem Abuakwa for his interventions because the galamsey has spoilt all their drinking water and they don’t have any boreholes or pipe-borne water they depend on.
