The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated plans to augment the current power production of the country with 2,000 megawatts of solar power should he be elected as the next president of Ghana.
He said 2,000 megawatts of solar power, which was about half of the total electricity consumption of the country, would boost businesses and also reduce the cost of power.
Under this initiative, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) indicated that all the solar would not be imported but manufactured here in Ghana.
He said under his administration, we will have factories established here in Ghana so that we manufacture the solar panels.
This, he noted, will even allow Ghana to export some of the panels to other countries.
Dr. Bawumia added that through a Buy Ghana
First Policy, a law would be designed to ensure that anything a country will buy, we will first look into Ghana and buy it in Ghana.
He said we will import when the things we want to buy are not manufactured in the country.
“We will establish factories right in here to manufacture solar panels for Ghana. We will import them. We will manufacture them right here and create jobs for our people because it would be a lot of solar panels. After we do ours, we can also be selling the solar panels to other countries.
So I have this policy dubbed ‘Buy Ghana First Policy’. So anything government will buy you first by law—we are going to pass law—you have to look first in Ghana. If you can import them if we don’t have them in this country. If the items are uniforms, we have tailors in Ghana who can design them. If the items are furniture, we have carpenters in Ghana who can design them. Anything we will buy, we will first look into Ghana and buy them in Ghana.”
