The fire outbreak at Zongo Lane has been finally extinguished – GNFS announces

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says it has finally extinguished the fire outbreak that swept through commercials in Accra’s Central Business District.

Personnel from the service responded to a call of the outbreak last week Sunday, September 1, 2024.

The fire swept through the commercial area in Accra’s Central Business District, leaving several shops destroyed.

The outbreak is to have started in a small shop around 9:40 am and quickly spread to neighbouring shops, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.

It took officers from the service seven days to finally extinguish the fire.

No casualties were recorded, but the outbreaks destroyed goods worth several millions of Ghana cedis.

Portions of the building that caught fire collapsed.

On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover, accompanied by security officials, visited the fire scene.

Despite the efforts to control the situation, the building’s collapse has intensified concerns about the structural integrity of nearby properties.

The Minister attributed the outbreak to the negligence of the traders in the area.

He also announced that the government would not be offering compensation to those affected by the outbreak.
