The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has warned of a possible generational food and nutrition crisis if efforts are not deployed in dealing with galamsey.
The Association, in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, asked the government to immediately impose a ban on illegal mining to protect the environment, farmers’ livelihoods, and food security.
The statement revealed that over 1.2 million hectares of farmland have been lost to illegal mining activities.
It further disclosed that water bodies and irrigation facilities have been polluted, making sustainable production challenging.
The association added that if efforts are not deployed immediately, we will witness a generational food crisis.
