Former General Secretary of the University Teachers Association (UTAG), Dr. Eric K. K. Abavari, has warned that Ghana may witness the insurgence of galamsey criminal lords who may threaten the peace, stability, and security of the state.
He said the magnitude of the galamsey crisis is gradually on its way, and it was important our leaders put in measures to address it.
He advised that the galamsey perpetrators may soon transform into regional or area overlords, mirroring the drug barons in Southern America.
He expressed his opinion on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM in an interview with host Kwabena Agyapong.
‘’ We are sitting on a time bomb. There is the magnitude of a problem we have failed to examine. The galamsey crisis may led to the creation of galamsey overlords in some parts of the country, just like we have drug barons in Southern America. These drug barons have mafiaso groups that exchange weapons, and if we fail in addressing the galamsey menace, that is the exact problem we are going to face in Ghana. It will get to a point where our leaders or authorities will have no access to certain concessions, and even if they do so, it is likely it may get them killed.
That is the threat we may face. The second threat I want to speak about is the vegetation cover they have destroyed. They have dug pits and abandoned them without any form of reclamation. These pits would be dangerous because they could lead to the deaths of people. The issues we have raised about galamsey are real, and we are not exaggerating. We are raising valid concerns that our authorities ought to address.
Meanwhile, he has warned UTAG is preparing to embark on a nationwide strike if the government fails to address the issues.
He noted that they have given the government till the end of the month to roll out measures for addressing galamsey or face their wrath.
