President Akufo-Addo has today, Friday, September 13, 2024, commissioned the James Town Fishing Harbour.

The President announced that the project, a dream since 1965, has become a modern facility that will empower the livelihoods of fishermen in the area.

He also described the project as a symbol of the commitment of the NPP administration and one that moves beyond words to the fulfilment of that promise made to the people of James Town.

The project, which includes dredging about 100,000 cubic meters of Harbour Basin, construction of hydraulic structures about 1,251 meters, and the construction area of management (office buildings, trading markets, cold storage, processing areas, commercial areas, and other production and supporting facilities making up 12644.11 cubic meters), has been under construction since August 2020.

The project was executed by the CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Limited, a Chinese marine engineering company.

The president took to Facebook, indicating that the commissioned project will create job opportunities for residents in the area.

He wrote, ‘’On Friday, 13th September, I commissioned the long-awaited Jamestown Fishing Harbour, fulfilling a promise I made to the people of Jamestown and Ghana as a whole. This project, which had been a dream since 1965, now stands as a modern facility that will empower the livelihoods of our hard-working fishermen and transform the local economy. It is a symbol of the commitment of my government to move beyond words and deliver on our promises.

This new harbour is more than just infrastructure—it is a lifeline for the people of Jamestown. With its state-of-the-art facilities, including a fish market, ice-making plant, cold store, and daycare centre for mothers, it will not only improve the handling and storage of fish but also create jobs and bring dignity to those who sustain their families and communities through fishing. This is governance that works for the people, improving lives and empowering future generations.

I am deeply satisfied to see this project completed, particularly as someone who grew up in this area. It is a personal joy to have been able to contribute to the development of Jamestown, a community that holds a special place in my heart. I extend my gratitude to the Ga Mantse and the entire community for their unwavering support and faith in this project.’’
