EC fears being exposed for manipulating the register – MP

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has slammed the Electoral Commission for rejecting the proposal for an audit of the voter register.

The lawmaker said the EC has refused this proposal because it has something to hide from Ghanaians.

The EC has called the planned September 17, 2024, demonstrations around the country as unnecessary since, in its opinion, demonstrations do not guarantee a credible register.

Deputy Director in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, said the exhibition exercise enables citizens to verify their details and allows for unearthing discrepancies in the register; additionally, it provides for the correction of discrepancies in the register. This is not new. This has been the practice since 1992. The process of cleaning and strengthening the voter register is well defined by law.

He maintained that the EC is responsible and capable of addressing problems in the provisional register; thus, the NDC’s request for an independent agency to perform an audit was incorrect.

He went on to say that if the forensic audit is undertaken, the same EC will make the required modifications, which is why the EC believes the call for a forensic audit is incorrect.

However, in response, Dr. Apaak stated that the EC does not want to be exposed by the NDC’s proposed independent audit.

Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services, further asserted that the NDC is just misrepresenting, misinforming, and exaggerating issues that do not exist in order to provoke unfavourable emotions against the EC.

He claimed that establishing a reliable register requires an independent audit.

He stated that the desire of the people must prevail above that of the EC or the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

”The only reason why the EC wouldn’t want an independent entity to audit the voters’ register is because there is something to hide. The credibility of the voters register can ONLY be established by an independent audit. Therefore, the EC must do the right thing by allowing an independent audit of the register. The will of the people must reign supreme, not the will of the EC and the NPP!”
