The Ministries of Communications and Education have launched a Knowledge and Skills portal that grants access to over 5 million online library archives, learning resources and tools.
The launch makes Ghana the second country in Africa to launch this initiative.
The portal was launched on September 17, 2024, in Accra.
Impomtuo Technologies, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company built the portal with support from telecommunication giant MTN and funding from the World Bank.
The Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful speaking at the launch indicated that the platform will allow students of all classes of schools to access knowledge everywhere.
According to her, the platform was built and fed with information which is in line with the approved curriculum.
She also noted that the platform will afford students the opportunity to equip themselves with all the information they need to excel in the digital age.
“Only Egypt has a similar platform. Ours has AI integrated with other features and will be the best in Africa,” she said.
The inclusion of TVET courses and modules, she said is a great addition as it will help build the skills of technical students.
She added that the platform will serve as a marketing platform for Ghanaian publishers who she says will be given the opportunity to upload soft copies of their work to be sold at a fee.
The Education Minister, Osei Adutwum on his part stated that there is transformation going on in the Education sector.
He found it puzzling that politicians would publicly state Ghana’s education system is declining despite the evident progress being made in the sector.
Ms. Deborah Asmah, co-founder of Npontu Technologies and developer of the portal, underscored the GKSB’s expansive capabilities, noting its divergence from traditional learning systems by providing not only educational materials but also an interactive environment conducive to extensive practice.
She underlined that incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the platform is a game changer since it enables students to continually seek explanations and receive tailored support throughout their learning experience.
The Knowledge and Skills portal can be accessed at www.gksb.gov.gh.
The portal is free to access, enabling users to sign up at no cost. It is a transformative educational tool with the potential to democratise learning and empower students nationwide and beyond.
It features career planning tools, exam preparation aids, and integrates both global and local educational resources. Students, regardless of their location, can access the same high-quality educational content, ensuring a level playing field between urban and rural learners.
The portal also enables publishers to upload books for a fee, enriching the resources available to students.
