The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has responded to the petition of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a statement that it issued at 1 a.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
The Commission said it will review the petition by the NDC and provide a response in the coming days.
This petition was submitted on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, following the NDC’s nationwide “Enough is Enough” protest, held in all 16 regions of Ghana.
The party has called for a bipartisan probe into the conduct of the Electoral Commission (EC), leading to a forensic audit of the voters’ register and immediate publication of the forensic findings.
The rest are re-exhibition of the voter register, a 5-day re-exhibition period following the audit, correction of unauthorised vote transfers, adoption of a definitive timetable for electoral activities, an emergency meeting of stakeholders, including ECOWAS and the African Union (AU), among others, and implementation of accountability and integrity measures to prevent future manipulation of the voter register.
Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations Samuel Tettey, in a brief statement issued by the EC, said the electoral body will review the petition and provide a response.
He said the EC will deliver a robust and credible register that will help in organising free, fair, and transparent elections come December 7, 2024.
He also indicated that the doors of the EC were opened for them to engage with the NDC on the matters raised.
“The Electoral Commission has received the petition submitted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the end of their demonstration on Tuesday, 17th September, 2024.
The Commission will review the petition and provide its response in the coming days.
The Commission wishes to assure the general public that the process of producing the finalRegister is in its early stages.
The Commission is mindful that the Voters Register is the bedrock of credible, fair, and transparent Elections. We assure the NDC and all stakeholders of our avowed commitment to delivering a credible and robust final register ahead of the December 2024 elections.”
