President of the National House of Chiefs Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II has opoosed the call for the ban on all forms of mining activities as part of efforts aimed at dealing with illegal mining activities.
He has rather proposed for the stricter regulations to ensure responsible mining.
The traditional ruler is of the view that mining is a significant contributor to Ghana’s economy and argued that a total ban would not serve the country’s best interests.
He underscored the need for responsible mining practices.
He indicated that the Minerals Commission already regulates mining activities and emphasised that Ghanaians should mine using proper methods.
“As you are aware, I firmly oppose Galamsey and will persist in combating it; however, this stance should not preclude Ghanaians from participating in responsible mining practices. Gold mining is a valuable national resource, but it must be extracted using acceptable methods. To this end, institutions such as the Minerals Commission are tasked with regulating these activities.”
We urge those advocating for a state of emergency declaration and mining ban to consider the national benefits derived from mining activities, as ceasing operations would result in widespread job losses among the youth.
“We must implement effective regulations to ensure that all mining operations are conducted responsibly and within legal frameworks.”
On his part, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abdullai Jinapor maintained that the government remains committed in the fight against illegal mining.
“Although measures have been put in place, certain individuals driven by self-interest continue to harm our water bodies and forest reserves. We recognize that financial motivations underlie these actions, and the cartels involved will persist in attempting to evade detection. Nonetheless, we remain resolute in our efforts to safeguard our environmental resources, valuing the support and cooperation of Nananom and acknowledging the concerns and recommendations of multiple stakeholders.”
