National Chairperson of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, says the government does not respect them and has shown no interest in their welfare.
TEWU has declared a nationwide strike, effective Friday, September 20, 2024.
She said they have declared the strike because the government failed to address their demands for improved working conditions, despite numerous protests and negotiations.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she said the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has not implemented their negotiated and approved vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances even though an approval letter for implementation was issued by the Ministry of Finance to CAGD on August 2, 2024.
She stated that the government has not fulfilled its promise to recalculate and pay members Tier Two interest that has accrued from the delayed payment of the Tier Two deductions to our scheme from January 2010-2016.
Madama Mahamah served notice that they will continue to remain on strike until all the concerns they have raised have been addressed.
‘’The government’s failure to remit our Tier Two deductions to our scheme in a timely manner has hindered our fund managers’ ability to effectively manage and guarantee enhanced pensions. Notably, the government has accumulated an eight-month arrears from January 2024 to date, despite deducting these funds from our salaries.’’
She lamented that TEWU members are struggling due to the economic crisis in Ghana. The government has failed to appreciate our efforts, and we will no longer entertain that. We will continue to remain on strike until all our concerns have been addressed. We have submitted letters to the people that matter, and yet, the government has failed to take action”.
