The Council of State informed NDC it couldn’t act on concerns about NPP members joining the EC – GS

September 24, 2024
Fiifi-Kwetey-1

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, has revealed that it wrote to the Council State regarding the appointment of a known New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator to the Electoral Commission (EC) as a commissioner.

According to him, the party had raised reservations about the appointment and sought an audience with the Council of State.

But shockingly, the Council of State informed them that there was nothing they could do about the situation.

President Akufo-Addo appointed three new persons to the EC as commissioners.

The appointment of the three new members of the EC, Dr. Peter Appiahene, Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, and Reverend Akua Ofori Boateng, sparked several reactions.

The President was heavily criticised for the appointment because some of the appointees are said to be known members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He was particularly slammed for the appointment of Dr. Peter Appiahene, who is said to be a patron of TESCON, the tertiary education branch of the NPP, and Salima Ahmed Tijani, whose family relations are leading members of the NPP.

Mr. Kwetey, speaking at an engagement held by the party with the leadership of some civil society organisations (Monday, September,23, 2024) noted that these appointments form part of a grand scheme by the NPP to rig the elections.

He was also particularly surprised that the Council of State failed to intervene in the matter.

The chief scribe of the NDC said there is currently a decay in the country where we currently have NPP members appointed to the EC, saying, “We are not saying people in the EC do not vote. They do. We did not say that Afari Gyan never voted. Charlotte Osei never voted.

But never in history have we seen a die in the wool communicator of the NPP being part of the EC. We actually wrote to the Council of State, and they said there is nothing they could do about it.”

Mr. Kwetey stated that it is also unfortunate what the Peace Council said in 2016 and what it is saying about what is happening today. I feel sad for this country. I feel really sad for this country. The hycrocrisy in this nation, the double standards in this country, is nauseating.”

He added that the NDC will do everything it can to ensure that not just the NPP leaves, but it will set up a system that will simply create a fair opportunity.

“If you are doing well in government, you don’t have to set up systems to survive. The work you do should be able to win for you. But if you have to do what you’ve got to do, it is because you know deep down you have been a failure. That is why you have to do what you have to do to survive.”
