Energy News Africa Limited’s Executive Director, Michael Creg Afful, speculates that multiple reasons may have led to Samuel Dubik Mahama’s resignation as Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
According to him, two scenarios may have prompted his resignation, although the individual officially cited ‘personal reasons’.
He indicated since Dubik was appointed, he has not heard any negative thing regarding procurement breaches, dubious contracts, corruption, and corruption-related activities levelled against him apart from the Hubtle deal, which the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) raised concerns over.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM The energy expert said, ‘’so I don’t know if he resigned following the concerns raised over the Hubtle deal or the failure of the ECG to enforce the Cash Waterfall Mechanism. Or he may have resigned due to resistance from within due to the new measures he was rolling out to make the ECG better.
Mr. Creg Afful said, ‘’We are yet to know the reasons for his resignation. He cited personal reasons, but I am optimistic the real reasons for his resignation will soon come public’’.
He stated that Mr. Mahama has done his best despite some of the flaws he may have as MD of ECG.
He said the EC is required to collect Ghc 2 billion in revenue monthly, but it is only able to collect Ghc 800 million, which was around Ghc 400 million before Mr. Dubik Mahama was appointed to head ECG.
‘’Somehow you would have to give a little bit of credit to Dubik because when he was appointed, according to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the launch of the ECG Power App, the monthly collection of ECG was Ghc 400 million before Dubik was appointed. They were required to collect Ghc 2 billion but were collecting Ghc 400 million. Dubik Mahama increased it to Ghc 800 million. It means it was double of it. So you can agree that Dubik Mahama has made some gains. I can only assume that there was strong opposition towards his new approach and ways of managing the ECG. Whatever the reasons are, I am sure we will get to know why he resigned from his job,’’ he told host Kwabena Agyapong.
