The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced that plans were advanced by the government to construct 609 new homes for public servants.
The initiative the Minister explained would help target public servants and their housing needs.
He revealed this at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024.
The MP who represents the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency said the project underscores the government’s commitment to improving housing conditions for public servants.
“These new housing units are part of our broader efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit, which is currently estimated at 1.8 million units,” Minister Nkrumah said.
“Decent housing enriches the lives of our public servants. It provides them with dignity and enables them to perform their duties effectively.”
The Minister further disclosed that the project would be executed by the District Housing Programme.
The key objective of the project is to meet the housing needs of public sector employees, including teachers, nurses, police officers, and other essential workers, particularly those assigned to rural and underserved areas.
“Our public servants deserve quality housing that fosters a conducive environment for their work and family life,” Minister Nkrumah said.
“The new homes will be constructed in various districts across the country, ensuring accessibility for those in rural areas.”
He also stated that the Koforidua Affordable Housing Project, which had been stalled, will resume constructtion after being handed over to the State Housing Company Limited.
