Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has announced that the government is constructing 1,000 housing units for persons affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
The Minister disclosed this at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024.
According to the Minister, phase two of the project, which includes 1,010 additional units, has been approved.
The spillage, which occurred on October 15, 2023, destroyed several communities along the Lower Volta Basin.
Approximately 88,000 people were affected, and over 5,000 homes were destroyed.
Some of the victims are still displaced, but the minister assured them that the government remains committed to providing them with the needed support.
He also revealed that the commencement certificate has been secured for the project, and the government is finalising the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition processes to begin construction in this phase.
“Now already, 115 [housing] units are under construction, and they have gone past the 60 percent mark. Those are the units that I went to break ground for in April 2024. 115 of those units. We have also approved phase 2 of 1,010 units, and we have received the commencement certificate for phase 2.”
