Organised Labour has announced its decision to embark on a nationwide strike following the government’s failure to deal with some concerns they had raised regarding illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Labour, among other demands, asked the government to declare a state of emergency following the impact of the galamsey on the country.
It had also asked the government to suspend all small-scale mining activities and the mining in our forest reserves.
The deadline for these demands was September 30, 2024; however, Lands and Natural Resources, at an engagement with labour and organised groups, described these demands as draconian.
Labour, after its emergency meeting held today, Tuesday, October 1, 2024, declared that it will embark on a nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024.
A brief statement issued and jointly signed by Joshua A. Ansah, Secretary, Trades Union Congress, and Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary, Ghana Federation of Labour, read, ‘’Following the expiration of our deadline and the failure of the government to meet our demands on illegal mining (galamsey), Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect from October 10, 2024.
We are therefore calling on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, until the government accedes to our demands.’’
